Our principles for the use of artificial intelligence (AI)

1. We embrace the opportunities afforded by AI where it helps us work more effectively, efficiently, creatively, and to innovate towards our mission.

In our use of AI we ensure that:

  • we stay abreast of the functionality of the AI tools we use, emerging developments and ethical discussions.
  • we capture learning from our use of AI and seek to continually improve our practice.
  • we focus our use of AI on tasks that are routine and can be easily automated freeing up staff to do work that requires uniquely human qualities.
  • we don’t use AI to do tasks where human input is vital.

2. Our use of AI is in line with our commitment to making a positive difference in the world and working in step with the planet, our people and our clients.

In our use of AI we ensure:

  • our use of AI is purposeful, efficient and effective and works to minimise environmental impacts
  • that our people have equal opportunities to develop new skills in AI.
  • we consider and mitigate any impacts on the confidentiality and safety of our clients.
  • we work collaboratively with our clients to ensure any AI innovations are respectful and mutually beneficial, they have choice and control over the use of AI, and that any developments or wider sharing based on client learning are developed transparently in line with these principles.

3. We uphold the principles of ethical and robust social science research and evaluation.

In our use of AI we ensure:

  • that we are transparent and are able to explain how AI has been used
  • that we actively mitigate risks related to unreliability of data analysis, both in terms of accuracy and bias
  • the safety and confidentiality of our client data

4. We always use AI with a human in the loop and through our products, services and communication support and enable the people we work and engage with to do this too.

5. We use our position as thought leaders to share good practice in AI use, celebrate AI providers adopting the highest ethical and sustainable standards and support campaigns for regulation and to overturn extractive AI business models.

What is a B Corporation?

B Corporations (or B Corps) are a growing group of companies who are reinventing business by balancing people, planet and profit.

As a Certified B Corp, we meet rigorous social and environmental standards, which represents our commitment to goals beyond profit.

We achieved B Corp status in 2019 and successfully recertified, as each B Corp must do every three years to retain their status, in 2023 – with an improved score.
